Company Overview
Norwest was formed in 1979 by five partners: a geologist, an underground mining engineer, two surface mining engineers and a coal preparation engineer. Twenty-five years later, two of these founders - Geoff Jordan and Donovan Symonds - remain as senior executives of the company. A third founder, Gerry Stephenson, recently retired after serving as President of the Canadian company and Chairman. The founders recognized a need for practical and impartial mining consulting and geological services. All had extensive previous practical experience in the mining industry in North America, Europe and Australia. Two companies were formed in 1979: one in Canada (based in Calgary) and the other in the United States (based in Salt Lake City). The founding shareholders owned equal amounts of each company.
